Worship Together, June 7

June 7, 2020 by Poimen

Although we long for the day we can all gather together to worship and to fellowship with one another, now is not the time. Many of you are susceptible to the Corona virus or are concerned for someone with whom you are in contact. For this we are grateful. The word is that western South Dakota will likely see a spike in instances very soon and therefore, we must take extra precautions. Those who gather in person each week are making an effort to practice the CDC guidelines. If you are unable to attend in person, know that you are missed.

Take a few moments today to pray with one another (and for one another), to read the scriptures with one another, sing with one another and listen to the Word preached.

Worship in Music

He has delivered us from the domain of darkness and transferred us to the kingdom of his beloved Son, in whom we have redemption, the forgiveness of sins. He is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn of all creation. For by him all things were created, in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or dominions or rulers or authorities—all things were created through him and for him. And he is before all things, and in him all things hold together. And he is the head of the body, the church. He is the beginning, the firstborn from the dead, that in everything he might be preeminent. Colossians 1:13–18

HERE IS A LINK to a suggested music for worship.

Double Visioned

June 3, 2020 by Poimen

Thinking Out Loud

As people who are justified by faith, we see this present world with a double vision. On the one hand, we long and strive for a world where love and peace prevails and where injustices are few and far between. On the other hand, we know the world’s turmoil is sourced by sin and that the only eternal remedy is the gospel. So as Christians, we must be willing to apply a band-aid on the symptoms of sin while faithfully and diligently administering God’s remedy, the gospel. The gospel compels us to do so. It cannot be an either or. It must be both. But it must begin and end with the gospel.

When ministering in the world, having an understanding of, and beginning with the gospel in mind lends to a proper perspective. It brings to the forefront God’s provision in Christ for the hurting. It gives greater meaning to meeting material needs than merely filling a belly or providing a warm bed. The gospel reminds us of God’s mercy toward us when we don’t deserve it. It reminds us of just how patient the Lord is with us in our numerous short comings. The gospel centers your focus on Christ and guards the motives of your heart. This is important because we are quick to take glory for what God has ultimately done.

Above all, having an understanding of, and beginning with the gospel in mind keeps before us what really matters. It keeps at the forefront man’s desperate need for a Savior, and it is from this position that true compassion flows within and through you. Having an understanding of, and beginning with the gospel makes you aware of opportunities the Lord may give to plant the seed of the gospel, to articulate its truths in grace.

We, the recipients of God’s mercy are compelled to view the world with different eyes than that of the world. We know experientially what God has provided for us in Christ and the work He so faithfully continues to carry out in our lives.

The world’s problem is sin. It’s remedy is the gospel!

In times of national turmoil (and at all times), here are a few things that we would do well to put to practice immediately…

  • Pray… for those who are hurting, that the church would behave in wisdom and grace, that in your own heart, you will think biblically (pray before you speak or post on social media)
  • Act… take any and every opportunity the Lord provides to help make a difference where you live. You may not be able to impact the lives that are at the epicenter of turmoil, but you can make a difference right where you are. There is nothing unbiblical about working to make this world a better place to live.
  • Speak… pray for and take opportunity to speak the truth about God’s divine justice, satisfied for our sins in Christ’s death, so that in turn, He might be merciful to those come to Him in faith.

Meet Andrew Johnson

June 3, 2020 by Poimen

putting names with faces

So we’re killing two birds with one stone this week. We are putting a name to a face of one of our church family, PLUS we are doing an update on one of the missionaries we support.

This is Andrew Johnson (as if you didn’t know). Andrew came to Hot Springs as a student at Cornerstone Bible Institute back in 2009. Andrew was privileged to be reared in a home that loved Jesus. The Lord kindly brought him to faith in Christ when he was 5 or 6 years old. He affirms His faith to rest in Jesus alone for his standing before God.

After graduation in 2012, Andrew remained in Hot Springs for about 2 years, faithfully attending and serving at Calvary, primarily with Trek (Youth Group) and the Adult Sunday School class.

In 2014, Andrew began pursuing aviation training with missions in mind. Attending the School of Missionary Aviation Technologies in Ionia, Michigan, he completed his first step in preparation and shortly after, joined the Association of Baptists for Worldwide Evangelism (ABWE) in 2017. He partnered with missionaries to Ghana, Joseph and Janelle Gelatt.

Having returned back home in April 2020, from a year spent in Ghana, Andrew is preparing to leave again this fall to continue his aviation training at Kingdom Air Corps (KAC) near Wasilla, Alaska. There, he will obtain both his private and commercial pilots license. Flying at KAC will allow him to learn the specifics of being a bush pilot, preparing him for future ministry in Ghana.

Please pray for Andrew in these specific ways:

  • His Pre-field ministry (raising support). Pray that God would continue to provide gospel partners to support the work in Ghana.
  • His Aviation Training. All of the details are still not ironed out. Pray for a profitable time with Kingdom Air Corps.
  • Pray for safe and peaceful travel as he drives around to multiples states and churches.

Suggested Book of the Month, June

June 1, 2020 by Poimen

Reviewed by Isaac Stanley…

I encourage anybody who has not established (or would like to strengthen) the discipline of family devotions to grab this month’s book of the month, Family Worship by Donald Whitney.

Whitney gives a brief review of the importance of establishing a regular pattern of worship in the home, challenges fathers to take the lead, and provides a simple formula for beginning and maintaining the habit.

The importance of family devotions cannot be overstated – there are eternal matters at stake – yet God’s yoke is not heavy or burdensome and Whitney wisely keeps his challenge simple. Read, Pray, and Sing. That’s it! Read a passage of Scripture, spend a few moments in prayer, and find a way to sing together. It is unlikely that any single time of devotions will seem especially profound, no doubt there will often be distractions, but imagine the legacy of those few daily moments compounded into years and even decades of prioritizing the worship of our good God!

We have a few copies of this book at the church, or you can order a copy for yourself online. The best price we found is at Westminster Book Store.

Worship Together, May 31

May 31, 2020 by Poimen

With the many biblically sound broadcasts from around the world at our fingertips and the abundance of gospel-centered music with which to worship, we do well to remember that nothing can replace the fellowship and communion of the local church. Whether you worship from your living room or join us in person, give due diligence to stay in touch with your brothers and sisters from your Calvary church family.Below are the links for our Zoom Studies and Sunday Message.

Worship in Music

In the year that King Uzziah died I saw the Lord sitting upon a throne, high and lifted up; and the train of his robe filled the temple. Above him stood the seraphim. Each had six wings: with two he covered his face, and with two he covered his feet, and with two he flew. And one called to another and said: “Holy, holy, holy is the LORD of hosts; the whole earth is full of his glory!” And the foundations of the thresholds shook at the voice of him who called, and the house was filled with smoke. And I said: “Woe is me! For I am lost; for I am a man of unclean lips, and I dwell in the midst of a people of unclean lips; for my eyes have seen the King, the LORD of hosts!” (Isaiah 6:1–51)

Here is a PLAYLIST of music that rehearses the gospel and magnifies the Lord Jesus Christ…

A Wisdom from Godly Fear

May 27, 2020 by Poimen

Thinking Out Loud

This past Sunday we learned in Joshua 9, that the Gibeonites are contrasted with every other people group in the region. While the kings in the hill country and in the lowland all along the coast of the Great Sea… gathered together as one to fight against Joshua and Israel… the inhabitants of Gibeon… on their part acted with cunning (Joshua 9:1-4). That means that they acted wisely in order to enter into a peace agreement with Israel. Later in verse 24 we learn that they did this because they feared for [their] lives.

Fear comes at us in many ways and through a variety of circumstances. Fear, in and of itself is not an evil emotion. As a matter of fact, fear is sometimes brought about by God. The differentiating factor between healthy fear and ungodly fear is its object. Anything that grips your emotions so as to consume you with fear and anxiety, motivating you to self-reliance will rob you of peace. The object of your fear is your circumstance. It is a sin. Godly fear may grip your emotions and may consume you as well. But godly fear will motivate you to call out to God for help and will bring you to rest in Him. The object of your fear is your God (seeing God as greater than your circumstances). The peace that comes from a fear of God guards your heart and mind, even if your circumstances never change.

The kings of the land, driven by fear joined forces against God. The Gibeonites, driven by fear acted wisely, and sought peace with God and His people. Let what fear you have drive you to Christ.

Meet Isaac & Angie Stanley

May 27, 2020 by Poimen

Well you should know these faces. This is Isaac and Angie Stanley, and if you didn’t already know, Isaac is our Associate Pastor here at Calvary. Isaac’s primary role is to shepherd the flock of God that is among us (1 Peter 5:2), doing so by teaching and with leading in our worship. He currently teaches our adult Sunday Studies class and during the school year directs and teaches the TnT club in our Awana Clubs. Isaac and Angie both attended Cornerstone Bible Institute between 2009 To 2012 They met while they were students at CBI, and after Isaac returned from his studies at Appalachian Bible College they were married. Isaac recently earned a Masters degree in Ministry.

Angie grew up in Brazil as a daughter of missionary parents, who continue to serve today. Isaac’s family have spent their lives in Christian camping ministry. Angie gets to stay at home with their daughter Talitha, while Isaac is the maintenance manager at Pine Hills Retirement. They are excited to welcome child #2, a boy, in July! Angie is involved in our ladies Bible studies and enjoys writing to encourage Christian woman. You can access her latest writings at inthemeantime-livinglife.blogspot.com

Both Isaac and Angie place their hope in what God has provided through the cross of Christ. Isaac professes that God saved him at a very young age, largely through the testimony of his parents. Angie is grateful that God used a friend to confront her, as a teenager, of her need for the Savior.

Worship Together, May 24

May 24, 2020 by Poimen

Calvary Church Family, whether online or in person, come and join us this Sunday morning as we worship the Lord together. Below are the links for our Zoom Studies and Sunday Message.

Worship in Music

Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ! According to his great mercy, he has caused us to be born again to a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead, to an inheritance that is imperishable, undefiled, and unfading, kept in heaven for you, who by God’s power are being guarded through faith for a salvation ready to be revealed in the last time. In this you rejoice, though now for a little while, if necessary, you have been grieved by various trials, so that the tested genuineness of your faith—more precious than gold that perishes though it is tested by fire—may be found to result in praise and glory and honor at the revelation of Jesus Christ. Though you have not seen him, you love him. Though you do not now see him, you believe in him and rejoice with joy that is inexpressible and filled with glory, obtaining the outcome of your faith, the salvation of your souls.

Here is a Playlist you can use to worship in music.
